What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture therapy is a comprehensive healthcare system that originated in China over 2,000 years ago. It can be used to treat acute or chronic ailments, strengthen the immune system, and relieve pain.
After gathering information about your medical history, feeling your pulse and looking at your tongue, an Acupuncturist inserts extremely fine, stainless steel, sterile needles into specific points along the meridians (energetic pathways) of your body. The insertion of needles signals the body to correct imbalances in the flow of Qi (life energy), and restore health and well-being.
Other techniques that are used during treatment include: Moxibustion, Cupping, and Electrostim and Microstim. Acupuncturists also incorporate nutritional and lifestyle counseling based on the principles of Oriental Medicine.
Moxibustion: an herb that is processed in a variety of ways and used to warm acupuncture points.
Cupping Therapy: small glass cups in the shape of a round goldfish bowl that are used to create suction to help move stagnant qi and blood. They are most often applied to your back.
Electrostim/Microstim: Electrical stimulation that is used between two acupuncture points. The handles of two acupuncture needles are attached with wires to a special electrostim machine the size of your palms held together. Electrostim is much like tens, but is more focused. The most common use is to loosen knots in muscles that do not respond to massage. Microstim is used to help speed up the healing process of muscles and tendons. Microstim is very gentle stimulation and Electrostim is regular intensity set by the patient.
